The State Department called recent reports of Secretary of State Marco Rubio mulling an exit from the Trump administration following the Democratic Party’s victories in the midterm elections a “baseless hoax,” The Hill reports.
Reports surfaced Thursday from outlets such as the Independent and Bloomberg that said Rubio was weighing on leaving the Trump administration as he allegedly prepares a 2028 presidential run.
“This is complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid,” Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary of State for global public affairs, told The Hill. “The Secretary has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump’s administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax.”
The Independent report cited an unnamed “Washington insider” source who said Rubio should distance himself from the Iran war, adding that it would make sense for him to “step down and leave the administration.”
Johnson, in a social media post Thursday, responded to the Independent’s article, calling it “fake news from made-up anonymous ‘sources.’”
“The Independent story is fake news and not worth the paper it’s written on,” Edgar Vasquez, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for press, told The Hill on Thursday.
“Rubio is focused on advancing President Trump’s agenda and delivering for the American people,” Vasquez continued.
The Bloomberg report cited unnamed sources familiar with the matter who said Rubio and his advisers are weighing up options for his future. The sources said the secretary has not made a decision on whether to quit his post.
The report also said Rubio spoke with officials at the White House about stepping down and has been asked to stay, according to some of the sources.
