Baku. Farid Mirzayev – APA. Though the number of early marriages in Azerbaijan decreased a while ago, in recent years, this number has increased in some districts of the country, particularly in several townships of Baku, said Hijran Huseynova, chairwoman of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs.

She made the remarks on Wednesday during the international conference on “Strengthening of efforts to prevent early marriages” in Baku.

Huseynova said that eleven regional children and family support centers operating under the State Committee have recorded 20 cases of early marriage over the last two years. “17 of them were prevented. Girls are mostly forced into early marriages,” she noted.

Huseynova also touched on pupils’ absence from schools in Nardaran.

Pupils’ absence from schools and early marriages lead to more serious social processes, the chairwoman said, stressing that the recent incident in Nardaran township of Baku showed that children’s illiteracy is abused and they are involved in radical religious and political groups.

“Parents are withdrawing their children from 6th or 7th grades. Especially mothers appeal to us that their husbands don’t allow children to attend the school. It is a violation of both the rights of children, as well as state laws,” she said.
