Recent Earthquake in Azerbaijanâ€™s Sheki likely to awaken other seismic focuses in country

Yetirmishli recalled the 6-magnitude earthquake that previously happened in this region in 1953-1963 and in 2003.

The earthquake was also felt in Baku, Lankaran, Nakhchivan due to deep fault lines, Yetirmishli said, adding the process in the seismic focus will come to an end gradually as the earthquake was so strong.

He noted that a great compression caused a left-sided displacement at a depth of 16 kilometers.

More than 50 aftershocks were recorded after September 4, Yetirmishli noted, denying the possibility of the reoccurrence of a 7-magnitude earthquake in the country. “Let the people not afraid of anything, quakes measuring 3 to 6 occurred in various parts of the country after the strong quake in Baku in 2000.”

G. Yetirmishli also spoke of whether this earthquake might awaken other earthquake focuses.

“The quake that hit Sheki might possibly awaken other earthquake focuses. There are zones with high activity. For one thing, Shamakhi-Ismayilli is the most active zone. That’s where most of the tremors occur. There have been quakes in this zone throughout history. But it’s virtually impossible to make a precise prediction in this area. And there is no need to cause unnecessary anxiety among people,” he said.

Yetirmishli further elaborated on the improbability of making any prediction in a short period of time.

“Energy discharge in the earthquake focus shown in the picture could happen in short tremors too. We are doing researches on earthquake focuses and locate zones of tension. But it’s impossible to make a short-term prognosis of tremors,” Yetirmishli stressed.

He also noted that they preset a reference on seismicity in construction sites when there is an official application.

“For instance, there are areas in Baku with magnitude 8 to 9. We define [the level of] earthquake resistance for each building based on the area,” he outlined.
