The first meeting of the Board of Directors of the Azerbaijan Press Council has been held. Opening the meeting with introductory remarks, Press Council Chairman Vugar Zifaroglu provided information on the agenda items. The agenda was put to a vote and approved, APA reports.

Chairman Vugar Zifaroglu stated that the new composition of the Board of Directors faces a number of important tasks. He said that the Press Council has come a long way as the first media self-regulatory body in the post-Soviet space, gained prestige in society through its activities, and must continue working diligently to meet the expectations of the media community. While expressing confidence in this, Zifaroglu also emphasized the need to organize the Council's activities in accordance with the challenges of the modern era.

The Press Council chairman also stated that President Ilham Aliyev draws attention to negative developments in the information environment of the modern world in his speeches. The head of state's views are both highly educational and serve as a comprehensive roadmap. The new composition of the Press Council's Board of Directors should take this into account, provide practical support for the strategy outlined by the country's leader, carefully review international standards of journalistic professionalism, and explore opportunities for their implementation. Another important task is to make a worthy contribution to establishing a healthy media environment in the country.

Zifaroglu also emphasized that members of the Press Council's Board of Directors must take a principled position against traditional destructive trends targeting Azerbaijan in the global information space, act promptly, and build more dynamically on the experience gained in previous years in this area. He stated that all possible means would be used to achieve this.

The Press Council chairman stated that all items on the meeting's agenda were aimed at improving the Council's functionality and therefore emphasized that the organization's deputy chairpersons should be appointed first. Following discussions, Board members Mushfig Alasgarli and Elmira Musazade were elected to these positions.

Regarding the second agenda item, the formation of the Press Council's commissions, it was noted that the Council's primary mission is to investigate media-related complaints. According to the organization's Charter, the deputy chairpersons of the Press Council head the Complaints Commission on a rotating basis for two-year terms. Deputy Chairman Mushfig Alasgarli was assigned to lead the commission for the first term.

During the meeting, the chairpersons of the Press Council's other commissions were appointed, and it was decided that they would submit proposals concerning the activity programs and composition of the bodies they lead to the Council's Secretariat before the next meeting. It was also noted that involving relevant field experts and specialists, alongside Board members, in the commissions' activities would contribute to the overall work by increasing their effectiveness.

At the Board meeting, the executive secretary of the Press Council was also approved following a proposal by Chairman Vugar Zifaroglu. The candidacy of Avaz Rustamov was deemed acceptable for the position. Press Council Board member Amina Yusifgizi was elected chairperson of the Council's Assembly of Veteran Journalists.
