Judicial-Legal Council holds meeting

Addressing the meeting, Chairman of the Judicial-Legal Council, Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov spoke about the successive measures taken to improve the efficiency of judicial activity, noting the importance of creating new courts to facilitate population’s access to courts.

The minister further stressed the importance of transparency in appointment of judges. “As a result of a multi-phase process of appointment, 307 lawyers among 2,600 candidates have been appointed judges in recent years. Influential international organizations recommend Azerbaijan’s experience in this field as a model for other states,” he said.

Moreover, during the meeting detailed analyzes were carried out on expiration of the initial term of office of 50 judges, elected under new rules in 2010, their activities were studied, opinions of court of appeals, other data submitted by the Justice Ministry were discussed.

Chairman of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev emphasized the offences committed by judges, pointing out tasks in connection with the formation of a unified judicial practice.

During the open discussions attended by judges whose terms of office were expired, the shortcomings were touched upon which caused to citizens' complaints. It was stressed that being just and impartial, following the requirements of the ethical behavior code and showing care to citizens is the main task of judges, and proper proposals were developed on the suitability to the judge post.
