Azerbaijani president: All major events nothing compared to such tragedy

Baku – APA. The issue of resettling those affected by the fire that erupted in a sixteen-storey building in Baku’s Binagadi district on Tuesday has been solved, Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov said Wednesday at the first meeting of the State Commission, created to investigate the causes of the fire outbreak.

“Additionally, 2 cottages and 18 rooms have been prepared at war and labor veterans boarding houses of the Ministry of Labor and Population’s Social Protection in the Bilgah village. Moreover, 10 cottages have been made ready at the State Border Service’s boarding houses in Goradil,” said Sharifov, adding that the Health Ministry has taken control of each of those injured in the accident.

The deputy PM said the commission’s experts are checking the condition of the fire-hit building and the result will be reported to the head of state in two days.

Sharifov also noted that lighting has been cut off in the buildings with flammable cladding materials after a relevant decision of the commission.

“The control of buildings with this kind of façade materials will be taken over by the Baku City Mayor’s Office, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Interior Ministry and AzÉ™riÅŸÄ±q ASC. If you authorize, I do not recommend the cladding materials of such buildings are dismantled by the time the European Games begins. Because there are just 20 days left before the European Games begins. So it’s not going to be possible to replace the cladding materials of such buildings with new ones during this period,” Sharifov stressed.

In response to Sharifov’s proposal President Ilham Aliyev said the following.

“It has nothing to do with the European Games. Removal without reconstruction is all right. The European Games and other major events are nothing compared to such a tragedy. Samples have to be taken immediately from buildings covered with such materials. If there’s a danger, like being combustible, it should be removed right away. It can be done within a maximum of one or two weeks.”
