Azerbaijan names districts with high prevalence of thalassemia

Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloglu – APA. Thalassemia, the hereditary blood disease, is mostly found in Sheki, Agdash, Masalli, Sabirabad, Oguz and Goychay districts, says the State Program on struggle against thalassemia for 2015-2020 approved by the order of President Ilham Aliyev, APA reports.

The document mentions that Azerbaijan is among the countries with a high prevalence of thalassemia, where more than 200 children are born with this disease each year.

Note that, according to the WHO report, more than 250 million people are carriers for thalassemia in the world, and about 300 thousand people are thalassemia patients.
