Baku. Konul Kamilgizi – APA. “The National Atlas of the Republic of Azerbaijan” and the map “South Caucasus: 1903" jointly prepared by Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and State Land and Cartography Committee was presented on February 2.

Delivering a speech at the event, ANAS President Akif Alizade said that “The National Atlas of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, covering a large database, includes 19 sections, 444 pages.

He said that this atlas varies from others for the fact that it reflects the entire life of Azerbaijan in a complex. The ANAS president said that it covers all the information about Azerbaijani lands, industry, education, history, and other fields. “Another important thing is that information provision was also used in the preparation of the atlas. The creation of the atlas is the result of a collective work and many thanks go to them today.”

Alizade said that cartographic frauds regarding distortion of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, historical and geographical names increased and the need to prevent such frauds were envisaged in Azerbaijani President’s order on “South Caucasus: 1903” map dated April 20, 2011 and order “On the publication of “National Atlas of the Republic of Azerbaijan” dated 18 April, 2012.

Alizade spoke about the map “South Caucasus: 1903”, and said it was drawn by the department of topography of the South Caucasus Military District in 1903, adding that it is a decent response to Armenians who have always made territorial claims against Azerbaijan and presented themselves as aboriginal people.

“The map, which was prepared by the tsarist Russian Empire in 1903, once again proves that historical names in the current territory of Armenia belong to Azerbaijan and the historical Azerbaijani state, and the Armenian territorial claims are groundless,” he noted.

Chairman of the State Committee for Land and Cartography Garib Mammadov said that on recent days, the mass media outlets spreads provocative materials regarding distortion of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, historical and geographical names and change of names of the administrative-territorial units. “We have been unwillingly involved in the most brutal and ruthless wars – the cartographic war. Therefore, in order to avoid such situations and deliver accurate information to the world community, the President of Azerbaijan issued an order on the publication of South Caucasus: 1903 map, which was designed by the Tsarist Russia in 1903, in three languages, including Azerbaijani, English and Russian languages. The map is significant in terms of the geographical names in the territory of the Republic of Armenia entirely being belonged to Azerbaijan and clear description of the names of almost all settlements in Yerevan governorate in the Azerbaijani language and of Turkic origin. The publication of this map is of great importance to respond to the groundless Armenian claims,” he said.
