Possibility of bringing donor organs from abroad to Azerbaijan was discussed

Up to 600 patients are waiting for a kidney transplant on our list, Yegana Abbasova, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation of the Ministry of Health, told APA.

According to her, 4,000 dialysis patients did not apply to be included in the list because they did not hope to find a donor.

The director of the center noted that only corneal tissues are brought to the country from abroad: "In order to bring donor organs from abroad, we also need to give them donor organs. But we do not have this. Because, as I said, for this we also need to give them donor organs. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that European countries that are part of the "Eurotransplant" group give donor organs to each other."

The director of the center recalled that on October 7-8, 2024, a protocol of intent was signed in Shusha on the "Turkish Transplant" information system: "The 5 Turkic states that are part of this system - Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan - will be able to give and receive donor organs to each other."

The chairman of the center added that according to Azerbaijani legislation, donor organs taken from a corpse are first checked for citizens of the country, and if that organ is not suitable for any patient, it can be given to a foreign country.
