Director General of the Turkish Diyanet Foundation (TDV) Izani Turan and his two deputies, Recep Şükrü Balkan and Fatih Kayacan, have been dismissed from their positions, Sözcü reports.
The above-mentioned officials were dismissed following allegations that donations collected for Gaza had been invested in investment funds.
Investigations into the fund transactions are reportedly ongoing.
Following the dismissals, attention has turned to Safi Arpaguş, Head of Türkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Turkish Diyanet Foundation (TDV). Arpaguş has not made any new statement regarding the matter.
It should be noted that the Diyanet Foundation invested donations and zakat collected by Turkish citizens for Palestinians in Gaza in stock market funds, resulting in a substantial loss of approximately 48%.
However, the Foundation's own fatwas explicitly state that it is not permissible to invest zakat and charitable donations for profit before distributing them to people in need.
