Armenia should assess the consequences of joining the European Union, particularly in terms of exports of its products, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said, APA reports.

Commenting on the prospects for Armenia’s integration with the EU, Lukashenko said Yerevan should first understand where Armenian cognac, vegetables and fruits would be sold if the country joined the bloc.

He said Armenia should determine its future foreign policy course by taking into account the country’s economic interests and opportunities for selling national products.

“If you have decided to join the European Union, why are you rushing? If you are sure that France will buy your cognac, then fine, go ahead. Why are you rushing?” Lukashenko said, according to BelTA.

Armenia adopted legislation in 2025 declaring the launch of a process aimed at EU accession, while remaining a member of the Eurasian Economic Union. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that such legislation does not itself constitute EU membership and that further formal procedures would be required. Armenia has not automatically become an EU candidate country as a result of the law.
