As the Water Resources Agency, we also have a service that monitors the use and protection of our waters. In addition, it is very important to strengthen the safety of protection zones in water management systems and to improve their operation, Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency said at a meeting dedicated to the State Program for the Improvement of Water Supply, Wastewater, and Stormwater Systems in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula for 2026–2035, APA reports.
He stated that in many places, buildings and houses constructed in the protection zones have a very significant impact both on our systems and on the safety of those houses.
“It is necessary to conduct an inventory of the protection zones of water, stormwater, and wastewater systems, as well as, together with the relevant authorities, to take measures regarding the operation of the protection zones in accordance with the requirements of normative legal acts. By submitting a list to the Cabinet of Ministers, mandatory relocations will take place in many areas. As mentioned, because we do not have access to some main channels, such relocations will also be necessary in certain places. Some rules have already come into force in connection with your recently signed Order to prevent illegal interventions in water management facilities. In this regard, we will also submit certain works to the Cabinet of Ministers by the end of this month, which will further advance our work.
The implementation of protection measures for water and water management facilities against chemical, biological, hydrological, and other types of pollution—all of this, as we said, the state program envisages measures related only to investment. This will also allow our operating bodies and services over the next 10 years to both improve their work and further expand daily operational activities. By keeping these measures under control, we plan to bring all these systems up to European standards within 10 years,” Zaur Mikayilov emphasized.
