The groundbreaking ceremony for the monument to be erected in Çanakkale to the memory of Azerbaijani soldiers who were martyred in the battles for the liberation of Turkish lands in 1915 was held, said the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Turkiye, APA reports.

Azerbaijani ambassador to Turkiye Rashad Mammadov, head of the Azerbaijan-Turkiye Interparliamentary Working Group Ahliman Amiraslanov, governor of Dardanelles Ilhami Aktaş, head of the Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site Ismayil Kashdemir, other officials of the province, veterans and public representatives attended the ceremony.

The ceremony began with a minute's silence in memory of the martyrs and the anthems of Azerbaijan and Turkiye.

In his opening speech, Ambassador Rashad Mammadov said that Çanakkale is a holy place, and 100 years ago, Azerbaijanis died fighting against the enemy on these lands together with their brothers. The ambassador noted that this monument, which will be built by Azerbaijan on the instructions of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev, will immortalize the memory of the heroic children of Azerbaijan in the lands for which they died.

Head of the Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site, Ismayil Kashdemir, noted that the laying of the foundation of this deeply meaningful monument is of historical importance and emphasized that the monument will be one of the important symbols of Azerbaijan-Turkiye unity.

It was reported that the Azerbaijani Martyrs' Monument, which was founded in the territory of the Çanakkale Gallipoli Historical Site, is located 500 meters away from the Çanakkale Martyrs' Monument, and the area reserved for Azerbaijani martyrs covers a total area of 1960 square meters.

After the speeches, the letter prepared in memory of the day was signed by Ambassador Rashad Mammadov, Çanakkale Governor İlhami Aktash, and Head of the Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site Ismayil Kashdemir and placed on the foundation of the monument.

The ceremony ended with the laying of the foundation of the monument.

Noted that on April 24, 2015, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev attended the commemorative event held at the Çanakkale Martyrs' Complex on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Çanakkale battles. During his familiarization with the complex, he gave instructions to the relevant state institutions of Azerbaijan regarding the perpetuation of the memory of Azerbaijani soldiers who were martyred in the Çanakkale battles in the Çanakkale Martyrs' complex.

The sketch of the monument project was prepared by Azerbaijani sculptors at the order of President Ilham Aliyev.

According to the sculptor Tural Rzaguliyev's project, the bronze bas-relief of 1800x1900 mm, which will be made in Baku and will reflect the national ornaments, will depict Azerbaijani and Turkish soldiers fighting shoulder to shoulder. The bas-relief will be placed on a 3-meter-high pedestal, and the monument will have a total height of 13 meters with the column that will complete it.
