Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) Abbas Abbasov met with a delegation of socio-political activists visiting Azerbaijan from Kanaky (New Caledonia) and Maʻohi Nui (French Polynesia – Tahiti), the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) told APA.

The delegation arrived in Azerbaijan to support the Kanaky and Maʻohi Nui teams participating in the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival, held in Baku from October 22 to 30 with the support of the Baku Initiative Group, and to provide moral support to the young footballers representing their peoples in the international competition.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the current state of the struggle for independence of the Kanaky and Maʻohi Nui peoples, the importance of preserving national identity and cultural heritage, as well as strengthening cooperation.

The guests highly appreciated the activities of the Baku Initiative Group in bringing the struggle for independence of the Kanaky and Maʻohi Nui peoples to the attention of the international community, keeping decolonization issues on the international agenda, and developing ties between independence movements in various territories. They expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan's support in this direction and the opportunities created on international platforms.

Abbas Abbasov, in turn, wished success to the young footballers of both teams and emphasized that sport, in addition to strengthening friendship and solidarity among peoples, also serves to promote their national identity and rich culture. He stated that BIG would continue to support the international protection of the fundamental rights of peoples affected by colonialism, including their right to self-determination.

Note that on October 25, support rallies were held in front of the Athletes' Village and at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku to support the young footballers of both teams. Fans also showcased the culture and traditions of their peoples through national songs and dances.
