Convalescent plasma therapy to be applied to critically ill coronavirus patients in Azerbaijan

Convalescent plasma therapy used in the treatment of critically ill coronavirus patients will be implemented in Azerbaijan, TABIB told APA.

Immune plasma therapy is a method of treatment used for critically ill patients diagnosed with COVID-19 using blood plasma collected by the Central Blood Bank from the patients recovered from illness.

Who can be a plasma donor for coronavirus patients?

• Individuals who diagnosed with COVID-19 and recovered;

• Individuals who tested negative for 2 times at least 14 days after clinical recovery;

• Volunteers aged 18-60;

• Men and non-pregnant women (no miscarriage or abortion), people who have never had a blood transfusion in their life.

The compatible donor fills in the consent form as in the case of blood donation and undergoes medical examination. Then a blood sample is taken from a donor, and the laboratory tests are conducted. Later the plasma is taken from the donors with compatible test results by the apheresis method. This procedure lasts for 45-60 minutes. The immune plasma can be taken from donor 3 times at most within 1 month with 7-10 days’ break beginning from the date of taking of the first plasma.

Does the plasma take pose any risk to the donor?

• This procedure doesn’t pose any risk to the donor’s health;

• The kits used for decomposition of blood during the apheresis method are disposable and sterile;

• The kits are operated as the closed system;

• The blood doesn’t contact with the device during the procedure.

The data of the recovered patients are sent by TABIB to the Central Blood Bank, and the plasma donors are chosen by the Central Blood Bank. The voluntary donors are invited to the Central Blood Bank on the basis of the determined queue system. The two-way transportation is provided by the Central Blood Bank for the voluntary donors who have no way of coming. The plasmas are sent on the basis of the requests received from the hospital. The request for plasma can’t be made by a patient’s relative or a patient himself.
