The population size increased 969 000 as against January 1999, APA reports quoting the State Statistics Committee.

There is 4 818 000 (54%) urban and 4 104 000 (46%) is rural population. According to the results of last census in April, 2009, 4 372 000 of population are men and 4 550 000 – women.

2 046 000 are living in Baku, 398 000 in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and 6 478 000 – in other cities and regions. Totally there is 2 246 000 population, including internally displaced persons and part-time residents, in Baku.

Other largest cities for the number of population follow: Ganja 313 000 (4.7% increase as against 1999), Sumgayit 310 000 (21,6%), Mingachevir 96 000 (2.1%), Shirvan 77 000 (10%), Shaki 63 000 (3.3%), Nakhchivan 74 000 (17.5%), Yevlakh – 58 000 (11.5%), Khankendi 55 000 (on the basis of 1989 data), Khirdalan 92 000 (for 3.2 times) and Lankaran 50 000 (4.2%).

The largest regions for population size are Lankaran (206 000), Masalli (197 000), Shamkir (191 000) and Absheron (190 000).
