Believer arrested in ceremony on occasion of month of Muharram in Azerbaijan

Baku. Hafiz Heydarov – APA. One has been arrested in the traditional religious ceremony held in Ganja city of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the month of Muharram, APA reports. Ganja believers made a statement on the event. The statement says that Bahruz Sadigov, who is getting religious education, has been illegally arrested by the police during the traditional religious ceremonies in Ganja. The other participants underwent pressure by the police. The believers say that mass ceremonies on the martyrdom of Imam Hussein have been held in Ganja for centuries, these ceremonies are a part of our national, moral values.
“Even in the Soviet times the Bolshevik regime could not break the people’s will. It is not accidental that Ganja is also known as “City of Imam Hussein”. We protest against the illegal interference in the ceremony held on the occasion of the month of Muharram and all these irregularities. We demand the immediate release of the detainee and stop to the repressions against the believers,” he said.


Chief of Ganja police office, Colonel Rasim Musayev told APA that Sadigov was detained as he had violated the public order. He added that the detainee was released after being fined by the court.

Official representative of the State Committee on Work with Religious Structures Firdovsi Karimov told APA that he was aware of the incident. He said he shared the position of the chief of Ganja police and did not want to comment more.
“The police do not arrest anyone without evidence,” he said.
