Baku hosts 16th meeting of CIS Council of Heads of State News Agencies  - <span style="color: red;">UPDATED

APA reports that the heads of state news agencies of Azerbaijan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, as well as representatives of CIS Executive Committee are attending the meeting.

Delivering a keynote speech, Director General of Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency (AzerTAc) Aslan Aslanov said that the Council fulfills an important role as establishing common information space covering part of the European and Asian continents through exchange of experience: “One of the most important issues on the agenda is preparation for the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. This issue is related to our common past and we should review the question how to effectively highlight this event, as well as the entire former Soviet republic's contribution to the Victory.”

In his turn, chairman of the Itar-Tass Board Vitaly Ignatenko said that this meeting is being held in the country with free information space: “Azerbaijan shows a leading position in our information issue. I would like to emphasize that here we can witness the development of the country in which the censorship is not imposed on mass media and the citizens have free access to various information sources.”

As a result of the voting, Director General of ITAR-TASS Sergey Mikhailov was elected as Chairman of the Council of Heads of State News Agencies.

The agenda of the Council contains the report on the activity of the organization, preparation for the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, cooperation of the state news agencies during Belarus' presidency over the CIS.

The agreement on the establishment of the CÄ°S Council of Heads of State News Agencies was signed in 1995.
