Imprisoned journalists’ appeal considered

Preparatory court proceeding on appeal filed against the decision of Yasamal district court on sentencing editor-in-chief of Mukhalifet (opposition) newspaper Rovshen Kebirli and the newspaper correspondent Yashar Agazade was held in Appeals Court, APA reports.
Lawyer, director of Media Rights Institute Rashad Hajili petitioned for commuting the journalists’ arrest. He said that the journalists are kept in very narrow cell and regarded it as insulting human dignity.
Parliamentarian, academician Jalal Aliyev’s lawyer Ikram Shirinov protested to the petition. Commenting on the detention conditions the lawyer said that there should be discrimination among the prisoners.
Kabirli’s other lawyer Aslan Ismayilov withdrew Rashad Hajilli’s comments, but the claimant did not agree to commuting the journalists’ arrest. The court hearing has been fixed to July 4.
