Media freedom and journalistsâ€™ sources protection conference in Luxembourg

A conference dedicated to media freedom and protection of journalistsâ€™ sources was held on Monday in Luxembourg, APA correspondent reports from the Council of Europe. The conference was organized by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Subcommittee for Media on the initiative of Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies. Mostly European journalists, non-governmental media organizations and parliamentarians attended the round table. They discussed problems the journalists faced throughout Europe, protection of journalists, prevention of their persecution by the government and etc. Chairman of PACE Subcommittee for Media Andrew McIntosh said â€œif the journalists feared for their lives, it meant the democracy was under the threatâ€.

Andrew McIntosh was UKâ€™s former minister for the media and heritage and now he is preparing PACE report on media freedoms. Director of the International Media Freedom center William Horsley made a report at the conference describing the situation of media and journalists in the Council of Europe member countries.
