Tunnel and bridge projects on the railway section of the Zangezur corridor are in their final stage, said Advisor to the Chairman of “Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC, Tural Abbasli, while informing members of the diplomatic corps, APA’s correspondent dispatched to Zangilan reports.

“Dynamite is used for drilling the tunnel walls, and approximately 2–3 meters of excavation is carried out daily. Immediately after excavation, the walls are reinforced with special bolts, wire, and concrete. The total length of the tunnel is 677 meters. Another tunnel follows it, with a length of 1,067 meters. Both tunnels are being constructed using a closed-pipe technology,” he said.

According to the ADY representative, taking into account the mountainous terrain, a special gallery has been built above the tunnel to prevent falling rocks: “When we started construction, the area was full of stones, so we applied an engineering solution to protect the tunnel. As part of the project, a total of 594 engineering structures are being built, including 4 tunnels and 14 bridges. The region’s longest railway bridge — 771 meters long — is also located here. A bridge with a height of 35 meters is considered one of the largest engineering structures in the region. The overall progress of construction is 68 percent.”

“The construction of the railway up to the border section will be completed by the end of next year. Afterward, electrical, signaling, communication, and landscaping works will be finalized,” Tural Abbasli added.

Tural Abbasli added that 9 stations are planned within the project: "Currently, work is being completed between the Hakari and Zangilan stations. A bridge will be built at the exit of the tunnel that will connect Azerbaijan with Iran."

The ADY chairman’s advisor emphasized that a certain section of the railway is already in operation to meet the needs of the “Holcim” plant located in the Araz Economic Zone, and 25,000 tons of cargo have been transported this year.

“From a technical standpoint, this is possible. Once the detailed project is ready, that 42-kilometer section can be completed within 2–2.5 years,” the ADY representative said in response to a question about the restoration of the railway line passing through Armenian territory.
