The death of a seafarer aboard a Greek-operated oil tanker attacked in the Gulf on Nov. 5 was confirmed on Friday, Greek shipping newspaper Naftemporiki reports.
The vessel's operator, Velos Tankers Ltd., confirmed the death of the seafarer in a statement.
The tanker, flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, was sailing without cargo to the Bahraini port of Sitra when an unidentified projectile struck the vessel's port aft section, triggering an explosion and fire.
The fire was subsequently extinguished. One seafarer who had initially been reported missing was later confirmed dead, while the remaining crew members were unharmed, the report said.
Following instructions from the relevant authorities, the tanker later proceeded to Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Bahrain to provide necessary support to the crew and facilitate a preliminary investigation into the incident. The operator said the extent of the damage to the vessel remained unclear.
The circumstances surrounding the incident and the origin of the projectiles remain under investigation.
