At least 25 seafarers have been killed in the Strait of Hormuz since February 28 as a result of the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, APA reports, citing the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO).
According to the organization, the latest victim was a crew member of the Velos Sapphire tanker, which was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on November 5. Since the end of February, the number of attacks on merchant vessels in the region has reached 130, while thousands of seafarers remain stranded in the Persian Gulf.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated that seafarers are being killed and injured in attacks and are facing shortages of food, water, and medical assistance.
Members of the organization called on states to refrain from unlawful actions that threaten the safety of seafarers and international shipping.
The IMO will develop additional measures to mitigate the humanitarian consequences of the crisis and prevent further loss of life.
