"Currently, there are four border crossing points operating between Iran and Azerbaijan. These are the border crossing points in the directions of Astara, Bilasuvar, Julfa, and Shahtakhti-Poladst," said the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilou, who is on a visit to Nakhchivan, in an interview with APA’s local bureau.

The diplomat stated that in the coming months, a new crossing point will be opened in the Aghbend-Kalaleh region.

The ambassador noted that in recent days, both the Azerbaijani and Iranian sides have inspected the Aghbend-Kalaleh automobile bridge: “The work is going very well; the construction of the bridge will be completed by the end of December. At the same time, the preparatory work of some institutions related to the crossing point continues. This means that new opportunities will arise to further expand economic relations between Azerbaijan and Iran. As you know, for the last 30 years, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has been maintaining free and convenient connections with other regions of Azerbaijan by using the territory of Iran.”

He noted that with the opening of the new automobile bridge, Nakhchivan’s connection to the main part of Azerbaijan will become shorter and take less time. “In addition, other infrastructure and construction works are being carried out in that direction. Since the road passes through mountainous areas in some places, there used to be difficulties, especially during the winter months. Therefore, new tunnels are being built, and I have also inspected those tunnels. The work is progressing very well; in some sections, the road is being expanded. Overall, the situation is very positive, and these projects will further enhance economic relations and facilitate Nakhchivan’s connection with the rest of Azerbaijan,” he said.

Mojtaba Demirchilou emphasized that visiting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic provided an opportunity to become familiar with Nakhchivan’s potential, including its economic capacity. “It is very pleasing that over the past 30 years, we have witnessed the development and deepening of Iran-Azerbaijan relations, including those between the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Iran,” he added.

The ambassador also noted that Nakhchivan plays a very important role in bilateral relations: “I recall that during the visit of the National Leader of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, to Iran in 1992, major agreements were reached. Based on those agreements, Nakhchivan–Iran and, in general, Iran–Azerbaijan relations have developed. Now, Nakhchivan is in a position where great progress has been achieved in both the economic and other fields. At the same time, Azerbaijan’s victory and the liberation of its occupied territories have created new opportunities. This peace and stability provide us with broad prospects.”

Mojtaba Demirchilou added that the entire region is benefiting from this new situation.
