Baku. Nijat Mustafayev – APA-Economics. Azerbaijan’s mobile operator Bakcell plans to provide WiMAX services to customers from 2010.
“We are now testing this technology with 16 Mb/sec symmetric broadband speed. We plan to complete the tests and achieve 70 Mb/sec next year,” said Bakcell.
WiMAX, an approximate acronym of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides for the wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular-type access.
Bakcell started testing WiMAX in 2006 under a license by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies.
Launched operation in 1994, Bakcell provides mobile communications service to 1.2 million customers.
In total, 5.4 million mobile subscribers are serviced by three operators in Azerbaijan.
