Baku – APA-Economics. Nokia will stop selling Symbian smartphones in the U.S. and Canada in preparation for their transition over to Windows phone 7 as their operating system of choice, MyBroadband reported.

“When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc.,” said Chris Weber, Nokia’s U.S. President.

In addition to this, Nokia is doing away with their policy of selling high end devices as “unlocked” and carrier independent. Nokia is reportedly working closely with wireless carriers to organise price and distribution of Nokia Windows Mobile phones.

The move away from selling Symbian devices contradicts the original statement by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop who was quoted as saying, “We’re in a period where the investment in Symbian absolutely continues.” Elop also promised that Nokia would continue to support Symbian until 2016, though this is probably in reference to ongoing support and troubleshooting rather than new development.
