Ayvaz Mardanov, the mufti of the Caucasian Muslims Office’s office in Georgia, said in a statement to APA’s Georgia bureau that the killing has taken place in retaliation for the victim’s interview to Georgian state television.
According to him, Fikret Ahmadov has told the Imedi channel that Wahhabis have increased in the village over the last few years.
“Having heard of this, another village resident Ramin Isayev called him out to settle accounts. So they met at the village secondary school and began to argue with each other. As a result, Ramin Isayev stabbed Fikret Ahmadov, who used to be his close friend before. Ramin is said to have previously been a follower of Shia madhhab and then joined a radical Wahhabi group,” said the mufti.
Mardanov added that Soghanliq residents have protested against the spread of Wahhabism in the village.
“The Wahhabis were trying to build a mosque in the village but residents stood against them and appeal to court. As a result, the mosque was left incomplete and the Wahhabis continued their worship in the cellar of the incomplete mosque,” he said.
Imedi channel has interviewed both Shiites and Wahhabis in regard to the mosque’s construction but the broadcasting of the interviews draw resentment from residents.
Ramin Isayev has fled the scene.
The fact is under investigation.
Fikret Ahmadov will be buried today.
