UN's new Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan assumes office

The new United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Dmitry Shlapachenko, has assumed his duties, APA reports.

According to a UN statement, Ukrainian national Dmitry Shlapachenko was appointed to the position by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with the consent of the Azerbaijani government.

It was stated that Dmitry Shlapachenko has 28 years of experience in diplomacy, international cooperation, political and socio-economic affairs, development coordination, peacebuilding, and strategic planning.

Prior to this appointment, he served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan. He also worked at the UN Headquarters in New York as Team Leader for the Horn of Africa and the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the Department of Peace Operations. In addition, he has held various leadership positions in Iraq, Kosovo, Somalia, Tajikistan, and Vienna.

Before joining the United Nations, he worked for the U.S. Peace Corps and the OSCE. He has also worked as an author on international affairs in Ukraine.

Dmitry Shlapachenko holds bachelor's and master's degrees in international journalism and a doctorate in international relations from Kyiv University. He also earned a master's degree in political science from the Central European University in Hungary and a master's degree in international relations from the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom. He also completed a fellowship program in international journalism and public policy at Duke University in the United States.
