The initialing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia last year was the most important step taken in the region in decades, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan, APA reports.

The EU leader said that the initialing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington last year was a historic event.

"This was the most important step taken by the South Caucasus region in decades. What I have said also applies to the ongoing normalization process with Türkiye. Such decisions require political courage and leadership. I am confident that the reward for those decisions will be very great. Opening the borders will transform Armenia's trade future. We will support you in turning this vision into reality," Ursula von der Leyen emphasized.
