Although Georgia intends to chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2027, the European Union (EU) does not support Tbilisi's initiative, APA's local bureau reports, citing the Brussels-based Rapporteur publication.
According to the report, Cyprus, which is supported by the EU, is currently the only other official candidate for the OSCE chairmanship, but Türkiye is blocking its candidacy.
EU spokesperson Christian Wiegand confirmed to the publication that Brussels continues to support Cyprus' candidacy and stressed that alternative candidates are not being considered.
Note that Georgia has submitted its candidacy for the OSCE chairmanship next year. Switzerland holds the organization's chairmanship this year. The last major event under Switzerland's chairmanship will be the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting on December 3-4.
