Natural gas consumption in the European Union increased by 5.2% year-on-year to 16.6 billion cubic meters in August this year, APA-Economics reports, citing a report by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
According to the report, the increase in demand was mainly supported by higher gas demand in the power generation sector. Unusually hot weather across much of Europe led to increased electricity consumption for cooling. The average temperature in the European Union was 20.26°C, approximately 0.8°C higher than in August 2025. In addition, heatwave conditions were observed in several areas of Western, Central and Southern Europe.
Recall that the transportation of Azerbaijani gas to Europe via the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) began on December 31, 2020.
