Mauritanian Forces Kill 3 In Explosives-Packed Car

Baku â€“ APA. Mauritanian military officials say three terrorists were killed Wednesday when security forces blew up their explosive-filled car outside the capital, Nouakchott, APA reports quoting â€œThe Voice of Americaâ€.

Military sources say the blast occurred early Wednesday about 12 kilometers from the city’s center. Several Mauritanian soldiers were injured in the explosion.

The security forces say they believe the vehicle was one of three which illegally entered the country through Mali.

On Tuesday, Mauritanian authorities captured another vehicle carrying explosives and weapons and detained at least one suspected member of al-Qaida’s north African wing, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

Sources say the third car, believed to be carrying supplies, got away.

Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb has carried out a series of attacks and kidnappings across Africa’s Sahel region in recent years, including several in Mauritania.
