People evacuated from 9 flooded villages

08 May 2010 16:22 (UTC +04:00)

Minister Heydarov said the measures were continued to repair two 83-meter dams destroyed as a result of floods. “We are constructing a road toward the second dam. An intensive work is going on there, but the water level has not fallen yet in Kur River. People were evacuated from 9 nearby villages and settled in different places. I visited the region together with Interior Minister Ramil Usubov and Deputy Prime Mister Abid Sharifov to learn the situation. There is no problem with temporary settlement of the evacuated people. They were provided with food, fresh water, medical service and energy. They will be provided with TV sets in the tents to receive regular information. The tent camps were set up not only in Shirvan, but other territories as wellâ€.

Kemaleddin Heydarov noted that the people would return home after the flood threats were prevented. “There is no condition for pumping water there now. The main issue is to restore destroyed part of the dams. After its restoration the water will change stream and create opportunities to solve other problemsâ€.

Heydarov said he visited the flooded areas together with Interior Minister Ramil Ususbov and saw the disaster zone from the helicopter. “I learned the situation together with Interior Minister Ramil Usubov throughout Kur River till its estuary and then we returned to Sabirabad. Of course, there are problems there, but emergency forces, water facility workers and irrigators are strengthening the damaged dams throughout the river. I don’t believe that the dams can be removed. A stable weather condition can assist the solving of problems. The meteorologists don’t forecast rainfall in the next few days. The problem will be solved as a result of intensive measuresâ€.

The Minister of Emergency Situations said the measures would be taken for solution of education problems of the children settled in the tent camps. “Abid Sharifov urged the representatives of the Ministry of Education to solve the education problems. They will take necessary measures for thatâ€.
