This was stated by Victoria Nuland, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, APA reported.
She said they discussed democracy and the human rights situation at the meetings.
Nuland noted that a vibrant conversation between the government and citizens is vital for future: “It’s something that the United States has supported and invested in for more than 20 years. Today, we did talk about the concerns that the United States has had in the last year on the human rights side, on the free media side. And we agreed that we would continue that conversation and strengthen it by creating a US-Azerbaijan dialogue on civil society and democracy. And finally we talked about people-to-people relations today, about the student exchanges that we have Fulbright, IREX, the FOREX program, about the importance of young Azerbaijanis having the chance to study in the United States and young Americans having the chance to come here, and work and learn in your country – a very important pillar of the work we did together”.
Nuland added that it’s very important to establish a structured dialogue today: “That’s why I’m very pleased that the president agreed today to establish this dialogue on civil society and democracy. I think it’ll allow us to work through some of the issues to talk really candidly as I was to do with the president today”.
