The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has detained Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia at New York's airport while he was attempting to leave the United States, Argentine broadcaster TN reports.
The incident occurred after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup. Other AFA officials were also subjected to inspection, with law enforcement officers seizing their mobile phones and computers for examination.
Court documents indicate that Tapia, AFA Treasurer Pablo Toviggino, and businessman Javier Faroni are scheduled to appear before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on July 30.
The investigation is focused on the association's financial and commercial activities, including transactions involving the purchase of high-value real estate in South Florida.
Earlier, French investigative journalist Romain Molina made a series of allegations against FIFA and the Argentine Football Association, claiming there may have been irregularities in the organizations' internal investigations and financial operations.
