Ad hoc Working Group on Caspian status holds its 23rd meeting in Baku

“The significant progress has been achieved as a result of this productive activity and good environment has been created for the general agreement between the littoral states on legal status of the Caspian Sea. I hope this meeting will promote more approach of the Caspian littoral states’ positions”.
Commenting on the results of Tehran Summit of the leaders of Caspian littoral countries, Elmar Mammadyarov called this event as an important step forward toward the development of cooperation. “This summit specified concrete directions of the work toward the solution of existing problems. Disputed issues of the Caspian Draft Convention can create reasons for the third summit of leaders of the littoral states. Regional peace and stability, energy resources exploitation are among the common interests of the Caspian littoral countries. All problems related to the Convention on Caspian legal status should be solved through the constructive dialogue within the generally accepted norms. Differences over the basin’s legal status should not damage the sovereign rights of the littoral countries in the Caspian Sea”.

Elmar Mammadyarov noted that discussions on the division of Caspian seabed, security and demilitarization issues, as well as construction of cables and pipelines should be continued. The Minister said he gave great importance to the second conference of the countries signed framework agreement on protection of Caspian environment.
