President Ilham Aliyev, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, US political and public figures attended the event, APA reports quoting AzerTAc news agency.

The event was remarkable from the standpoint of analyzing the results of Azerbaijan-UN cooperation.

President Aliyev met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The guests at the ceremony congratulated Azerbaijan on the 20th anniversary of its accession to the UN and its election as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev addressed the ceremony.

The Head of State thanked all guests for acceptance of invitation and participation in the event. He said Azerbaijan marks two remarkable events in its history. 20 years have been passed since Azerbaijanâ€™s accession to the United Nations. The country became the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council last year. A few days ago it took over the presidency of the UN Security Council. Thanking everyone for their support, President Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan regained its independence 20 years ago and have carried out large reforms in its political system in the past period. As a tolerant country, Azerbaijan plays an important role in the inter-culture dialogue in the world.

Speaking about the economic achievements of Azerbaijan President Aliyev said that in recent years the gross domestic product in the country has increased for several times, the level of poverty decreased. He also underlined the successful diversification of the economy.

The Head of State also spoke about the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict. He said that the UN Security Council adopted 4 resolutions on the conflict. â€œUnfortunately, Armenia doesnâ€™t fulfill these resolutions. The Nagorno Karabakh conflict is a serious obstacle to the international peace and security and is a flagrant violation of international lawâ€, said the president and noted that Nagorno Karabakh was Azerbaijanâ€™s land and the rights of our country had to be rapidly restored.

Aliyev mentioned the US-Azerbaijan relations as well. He underlined the development of relations in political, economic and energy security spheres and said that our country was a strategic partner of the US in the sphere of anti-terrorism. President said that the world community elected Azerbaijan as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council several months ago and our country would be an active and constructive member of this organization and will always support justice, norms of international law and peace.

Then a banquet was given on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijanâ€™s UN membership and its election as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013.
