Ban Ki-moon congratulates Azerbaijan on the twentieth anniversary of the entry into the UN and the country’s presidency of the Security Council

Baku-APA. Speaking at a reception in New York in honor of the 20th anniversary of the accession of Azerbaijan to the UN and the country’s presidency of the Security Council, Ban Ki-moon, referring to President Ilham Aliyev, stated that "the UN will continue to support Azerbaijan’s efforts to build prosperous and democratic future for the country’s total population", APA reports quoting UN official website.

UN Secretary-General congratulates the Government and people of Azerbaijan with the 20th anniversary of accession to the UN. "I also congratulate you on assuming the presidency of the Security Council in May," said Ban Ki-moon.

The UN chief said that as a new independent country of Azerbaijan in 1992 declared their commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Today he is an active member of the Alliance of Civilizations. Cooperation with agencies and foundations, the UN system in Azerbaijan covers broad areas - from post-conflict recovery to sustainable development.

Noting the absence of a breakthrough in peace talks on Nagorno-Karabakh, Ban Ki-moon expressed hope that they can be accelerated with the assistance of the OSCE Minsk Group.

The UN chief said that as a nonpermanent member of UN Security Council in 2012 and 2013, Azerbaijan is in the center of the international community’s efforts to maintain peace and security.

He stressed the important role of Azerbaijan in the solution of many problems.

Ban Ki-moon has called attention to the timeliness held tomorrow under the chairmanship of President Aliyev’s open Security Council meeting on terrorism. He recalled that in June, the General Assembly will conduct the third review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

Ban Ki-moon said he looks forward to continued close cooperation with Azerbaijan in the implementation of the UN and ensured that the Organization itself will continue to support the country’s efforts to build a prosperous and democratic future for the entire population.
