Foreign Ministry outlines Azerbaijan’s priorities during UN Security Council presidency

The ministry’s press service told APA that Azerbaijan was elected as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013 on October 24, 2011.

Azerbaijan passed voting stage consisting of 17 rounds and gained the support of 155 countries: “Azerbaijan’s election as the non-permanent member to the UN Security Council is an obvious example of the country’s increasing influence in both region and international arena, close participation in the international processes and contribution to restoration of peace and tranquility.”

The statement underlined that Azerbaijan took over rotating presidency at the UN Security Council today. Syria, Middle East, ongoing conflicts in Africa, situation in the Balkans, peace and international security, the prevention of international terrorism will remain the top issues on UN Security Council agenda during the Azerbaijan’s presidency.

Azerbaijan will hold special sessions on the prevention of international terrorism through cooperation, as well as other problems focused by the international community.
