Azerbaijan takes over UN Security Council presidency

The top issues remain Syria, the Middle East and the ongoing conflicts in Africa, Azerbaijanâ€™s Ambassador to UN Agshin Mehdiyev told United Nations Radio. He says Azerbaijan will hold a special session on the prevention of international terrorism through cooperation and hopes Azerbaijanâ€™s President Ilham Aliyev will chair that debate. He also says the situation in the Balkans as well as conflict prevention will be part of Azerbaijanâ€™s priorities for May.

The UN Security Council will focus attention on the Middle East problem, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as the prevention of international terrorism.

Ambassador said he hoped that the UN Security Council will save its solidarity to support Kofi Annanâ€™s six-point plan on Syria. According to Mehdiyev, Iranian problem will not be on agenda in May.
