Elmar Mammadyarov calls on European and Asian states to support Azerbaijan’s candidacy for non-permanent seat in UN Security Council

Baku – APA. Within the framework of his working visit to the US, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with the permanent representatives of the European countries to the UN, Foreign Ministry’s press service told APA.

Elmar Mammadyarov noted that Azerbaijan is a candidate at the October elections for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for 2012-2013, underlined the country’s advantages regarding the candidacy, called to support our country in the elections.

Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said our country is the leading state in the region and spoke about Azerbaijan’s energy strategy and large-scale international projects. Minister noted that Azerbaijan is the author of a number of important initiatives within the UN and contributed to the dialogue among civilizations. During the meeting with the ambassadors Minister gave information about the process of negotiations on Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

They exchanged views on a number of issues of mutual interest.

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov also met with the permanent representatives of the Asian countries to the UN.

Minister noted that Azerbaijan is a candidate at the October elections for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for 2012-2013, underlined the country’s advantages regarding the candidacy, called to support our country in the elections.

It was noted that Azerbaijan is pursuing an independent policy, is the leading state in the region, plays an important role in the development of the regional cooperation in the Caspian-Caucasian area, particularly in the projects on regional energy and transport, is the author of a number of important initiatives within the UN and other international organizations, plays the role of a bridge between Europe and Asia and contributed to the dialogue among civilizations.

Informing the permanent representatives of the Asian countries to the UN about the process of negotiations on Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Elmar Mammadyarov noted regretfully that four resolutions passed by the UN Security Council in 1993 on the withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories have not been implemented by Armenia and according to the UN Charter, the UN member states must implement such resolutions of the Security Council.

Exchange of views was held on the issues of mutual interest.
