28 April 2011 12:14 (UTC +04:00)
Shuster pointed out the good partnership relations between the two countries and added that he discussed a wide range of issues during the meeting with first vice speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament Ziyafat Asgarov and other parliamentarians. “We thanked Azerbaijan for its participation in Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan, as well as its role in the energy security of Europe. We had discussions on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict too. We are committed to peaceful solution to the conflict and support the Minsk Group’s activity. We also discussed the ways of strengthening the partnership as wellâ€.
Shuster said his colleagues at the Congress also visited Azerbaijan and they aimed to increase the Congress’ awareness of Azerbaijan. He said a joint project carried out by the Azerbaijani parliament and USAID was also discussed at the meeting and it was emphasized that this project is significant for the organizing meetings between the Azerbaijani citizens and their representatives at the parliament.
Shuster said the US-Azerbaijan relations had good prospects. “We share many common interests. After the September 11 events, Azerbaijan joined the US in its anti-terror war in Afghanistan and Iraq. We have joint interests in the field of energy security too. The United States give a great importance to the establishing and strengthening of transparent and democratic institutions. The US looks forward to establishing relations with the countries where the democratic institutions were established. It needs in timeâ€.
Shuster said the work concerning the Jackson-Vanik amendment was continued.
Congressmen Chris Murphy, Sean Duffy, Adam Kinzinger, Cedric Richmond and Jon Daniel Runyan were also in the delegation led by Shuster.
