President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has commented on the issue of the Falkland Islands, APA reports.
Responding to a question from an Argentine journalist about the Falkland Islands dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina at the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum, President Ilham Aliyev said he was well aware of how sensitive the issue is.
"Even when I was a student, the subject of my graduation thesis was the United Kingdom–Argentina conflict. Those events took place in 1982, and I graduated from university that same year. Therefore, the topic was highly relevant, and I wrote an approximately 30-page analysis of the events.
I think the positive aspect is that, despite the current situation, the United Kingdom and Argentina have maintained good relations. Probably the only rivalry you will face in the coming days will be in the semifinal. This would not be the first such encounter; there have been others before.
I believe this issue should be resolved in a spirit of goodwill and negotiations, as well as in accordance with the norms and principles of international law and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly. The key issue is the preservation of every country's territorial integrity. As you mentioned, Azerbaijan is a firm supporter of this principle.
Our position was, of course, shaped by the previous violation of our own territorial integrity. However, even after fully restoring our territorial integrity and sovereignty, we have not changed this position. We have never approached this issue through the prism of political advantage or bilateral relations with individual countries. We assess it from the perspective of justice and international law.
My message is this: defend your rights and your sovereignty. This is essentially the same message I conveyed to our Ukrainian friends last year," the head of state noted.
