46th Global Security Conference kicked off in Munich

The Munich Young Leaders initiative is jointly organized by the Körber Foundation and the Munich Security Conference. At the annual Munich Young Leaders Round Table on Security Policy, 25 outstanding young representatives of government institutions, parliaments, think-tanks and firms from Germany, selected NATO member countries and countries organized in the Partnership for Peace, the Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative discuss topical issues. The aim of the Round Table is to give future decision makers the opportunity to bring new ideas into the security policy debate and to encourage networking.
46th Munich Security Conference will be started on Friday. About 300 high-ranking participants, heads of states and governments, politicians and business people will join the conference. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and newly-elected Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano are among them. The conference agenda includes global security issues, NATO’s new strategy in Afghanistan, security of resources, reduction of nuclear weapons and arms control.
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev will also attend the conference. Azerbaijani leader will discuss with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel the issues of bilateral cooperation and regional security on Thursday within his three-day visit to Germany. The head of state will leave Berlin for Munich on February 5 to attend the security conference. He scheduled to meet with a number of officials, including US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg within the framework of the conference. The settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is expected to be on agenda of the meeting.
