President of Latvia's Constitutional Court visits Azerbaijan

A delegation led by President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia Irēna Kucina visited the Alley of Honors to pay tribute to National Leader Heydar Aliyev during its visit to Azerbaijan on July 10, the Press Service of the Constitutional Court told APA.

The guests also visited the grave of prominent ophthalmologist and academician Zarifa Aliyeva, paid tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives for Azerbaijan's independence and territorial integrity at the Alley of Martyrs, and laid flowers at the Eternal Flame monument.

Later, a meeting was held at the Constitutional Court with the delegation of the Constitutional Court of Latvia.

Chairman of the Constitutional Court Farhad Abdullayev noted with satisfaction that the friendly relations and cooperation based on mutual respect and trust between Azerbaijan and Latvia have developed dynamically in recent years.

It was noted that the effective partnership established between the two countries in the political, economic, humanitarian and other fields is also successfully continuing in the judicial and legal sphere. In this regard, developing cooperation between the Constitutional Courts and expanding the exchange of experience in ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution are of particular importance.

President of the Constitutional Court of Latvia Irēna Kucina provided detailed information on the activities of the institution she heads, the experience gained in the field of constitutional review, as well as decisions adopted to protect the constitutional rights of citizens. She noted that broad discussions and exchanges of views on issues common to constitutional justice bodies are highly beneficial.

Later, judges of the Constitutional Courts of both countries and senior staff members of their secretariats exchanged views on established judicial practice, current issues of constitutional review, modern mechanisms for protecting the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution, the organization of judicial activities in the context of digital transformation, the application of artificial intelligence technologies, ensuring the uniformity of judicial practice, and other legal issues of mutual interest.

The participants in the meeting emphasized that the continuation of bilateral cooperation would make an important contribution to improving the effectiveness of constitutional review based on progressive legal approaches.
