245 parliamentarians attended the voting at PACE on Tuesday, APA correspondent reports from Strasbourg. Tjornborn Jagland won 165 votes and his rival Polish Vlodzimej Tymoshevich – 80 votes. The new Secretary General will take the office on October 1.

Tjornborn Jagland was born on November 5, 1950. He took different political posts and led the Norway’s government in 1996-1997. Jagland was foreign minister in the Stoltenberg’s government in 2000-2001 and led the parliament in 2005-2009. He also led the Norwegian Workers Party in 1992-2002 and was an active supporter of Norway’s joining the European Union. He is also chairman of the Norway’s Nobel Committee.
