Seven people were killed and five others were injured in two separate shootings in Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday evening, police confirmed on Thursday.
In a statement, Western Cape police said they were investigating "two separate mass shooting incidents that claimed the lives of seven people and left five others injured" in Mitchells Plain and Philippi East, both located on the Cape Flats in Cape Town.
According to the statement, the first shooting occurred at about 8:10 p.m. local time (1810 GMT) in Mitchells Plain.
"Five men were reportedly standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by armed suspects who opened fire on them," police said.
Three victims, aged 18, 19 and 51, were declared dead at the scene, while two others, aged 17 and 22, were taken to hospital for treatment.
About 20 minutes later, police responded to another shooting at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, where seven people were shot. Four victims, aged between 17 and 20, died from their injuries, while three others were admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the circumstances surrounding both incidents remained under investigation.
"The motive for the shootings is yet to be determined and forms part of the police investigation," the statement said.
Police also said deployments in the affected areas had been increased to prevent further violence and enhance public safety.
"Western Cape police condemn these acts of violence in the strongest possible terms and remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice," the statement added.
