Iranian ambassador Mahammad Bagir Bahrami: History has shown that no aggressive country can stay in the occupied lands forever
“We have common history and culture, there are relations bringing both nations closer,†he said.
Bahrami said the two countries have great potential to extend the cooperation in all spheres, an impetus should be given to this potential.
“Azerbaijan’s development, progress means Iran’s development. Azerbaijan’s future and security is connected with Iran’s future and security,†he said.
The ambassador considers that Nagorno Karabakh conflict can not be solved without participation of the countries of the region.
“Outside countries have not made an improvement in the settlement of the conflict for 17 years, OSCE Minsk Group’s activity is ineffective. History has shown that no aggressive country can stay in the occupied lands forever. Iran has always condemned and is condemning this invasion,†he said.
Mahammad Bagir Bahrami said relations between Iran and Armenia were established to solve Nagorno Karabakh conflict peacefully.
Speaking about the economic relations the diplomat said trade turnover between the two countries was $ 670 million last year.
“This figure will be higher this year. Iran invested € 60 million in the construction of 25-storey building in Baku,†he said.
Asked why Iran was not invited to the informal summit of the littoral states in Aktau, the ambassador said the status of the Caspian Sea can not be discussed without Iran’s participation.
Bahrami said Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki sent letter to the littoral states, presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan said the status of the Caspian Sea was not discussed at the meeting. The ambassador said 70-80 percent of the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea had already been agreed.
Answering questions about the post-election situation in Iran Bahrami said former presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi was not in prison.
“Yesterday he met with speaker of Iranian parliament Ali Larijani. I want to note that everybody is responsible before the law,†he said.
Commenting on the words “Iranian embassy in Baku†written on Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan the ambassador said there was no special intention.
“The embassies of foreign countries in Iran also wrote the embassy of the country in Tehran,†he said.
