Kylian Mbappe, the poster boy of French football, turned from hero to villain as his penalty miss against Switzerland cost France a progression into the Euro 2020 quarter-finals. A heartbroken Mbappe took to Instagram to post an apology for his teammates and fans after the defeat, APA reports citing Times Now.

An enthralling day of football unfolded on Monday as Euro 2020 witnessed two back-to-back games going into the extra time. After Spain defeated Croatia 5-3 in 120 minutes, the France vs Switzerland game was settled in penalties.

While the Swiss dispatched all of their spot-kicks, scoring 5 in 5, Mbappe was the only one to miss for France who put only 4 of 5 in the net. As a result of the shootout affair, France were knocked out of the competition while Switzerland progressed to the Round of 16.

Mbappe, understandably down with what happened on the field, wrote an emotional post on Instagram.

"Very difficult to turn the page.

The sadness is immense after this elimination, we could not reach our goal. I'm sorry for this penalty miss. I wanted to help the team but failed. Getting to sleep will be difficult, but unfortunately it is the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.
I know you fans have been disappointed, but I would still like to thank you for your support and for always believing in us.

The most important thing will be to get up even stronger for the next challenges.

Congratulations and good luck to Switzerland."
