Pezeshkian: Mecca agreement is a step towards Muslim unity

The Mecca Agreement signed between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan is an important step towards unity among Muslims, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said, APA reports.

“We welcome this agreement. It is an important step towards bringing Muslims together,” Pezeshkian said.

The Iranian president stressed that the agreement between the three countries was not directed against Iran, adding that cooperation and mutual support among Muslim countries was a positive development.

Pezeshkian said regional security should be ensured through cooperation among countries in the region without interference from external powers. He added that it was unacceptable for any country to assume the role of a “regional policeman.”

“If Muslims support each other, stand by one another and resolve their problems among themselves, that is very good. We also support this approach,” he said.

Touching upon possible negotiations with the United States, Pezeshkian said Tehran did not trust Washington. According to him, Qatar and Pakistan have conveyed Iran’s messages to the US, and Tehran is now awaiting Washington’s response to its latest proposal.

He said the United States had failed to comply with agreements reached during previous negotiations, prompting Tehran to approach any new talks cautiously. Pezeshkian stressed that Iran was not opposed to negotiations but insisted that the country’s rights and security must be guaranteed.

The Iranian president also addressed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran’s decision to close the strait had been a natural response after all other options available to the country had been blocked.

He said the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened to commercial shipping if the war and confrontation were brought to an end through negotiations.

Pezeshkian also commented on the situation in Yemen, stressing the importance of resolving differences between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia through dialogue. He rejected claims that the Houthis’ activities were controlled by Iran, saying the Yemeni people made their own decisions.

The Iranian president also underlined the importance of developing Tehran’s relations with neighboring countries and called on Muslim states to prioritize cooperation over confrontation.
